Analysis Of A Freeze Frame: Misfits

Freeze Frame Of Misfits

Hotel Babylon Clip Analysis

Discuss the ways in which the extract constructs the representation of ethnicity.

This clip is about the treatment of illegal immigrants working secretly in the UK. We are shown briefly how the police and immigration officers work and the procedures taken to keep the immigrants safe. There is a significant construction of the representation of ethnicity which I am going to explore in this essay.
In the clip there are various different cameras angles and shots which individually I’ve off different effect and convey different emotions. One of the first significant shots is a long shot of the immigrants in the hall where we view them through the bars which gives us the impression that they are criminals or breaking the law in some way, this is also one of the first times we see them which instantly makes us view them as prisoners and see the fact that they are imprisoned, and it is also giving us a insight into what is going to happen later on in the clip. Whenever there is danger we are shown a fast zoom shot, for example when Ibrahim sees the officer they zoom in on his face which is distressed directing the viewer’s attention to it. In that same scene we are shown a close up on Ibrahim’s face and the officers in the background, this gives us a contrast in ethnicity since Ibrahim is black and all three officers are white, the shot is tense and is focused on the three officers giving us and impression that they are going are more important and are going to win the fight. After Ibrahim is caught the immigration leave, we see Jackie taking his things out of the locker, here we are shown a pan shot of all the sad faces of the other immigrants, which are all of different ethnicity implying that although they are safe they have lost the ‘game’ since one of them has been captured regardless of the fact that they’re from all different ethnicity background. There are many different ways this has been edited which all give off different effects. At first when the atmosphere is calm the editing is at a slower pace and when there is a tenser atmosphere there is rapid editing creating even more tension. In terms of ethnicity the main editing techniques are to give us a contrast between immigrants and the officers. We are shown the officers looking calm and then the edit changes to the immigrants acting chaotic and trying to run away. Another scene where contrast is present is when Ibrahim gets caught, the shot goes from seeing him being scared and being captured to Jackie comforting the lady who has gained consciousness, and this gives us to different alternatives of what could have happened.
Sound plays a key role in this clip since it helps set different atmospheres and also conveys a specific emotion. When the police enter there is a tense music showing us that they will bring trouble. There is also sad music after Ibrahim has been taken in the same scene with sad music we see all the immigrants looking depressed this implies that they had lost the battle, the music also makes us feel for sorry them and puts us in the position where we are on their side rather on the side of them officers.
Mise en scene also had a fundamental part In this clip. In the very first binary opposites since all the police are wearing black implying that they are on the bad side and all the immigrants are wearing red signifying danger, even the main staff member is wear Jackie is wearing red showing she is on the side of the immigrants a d the fact that she is of ethnic background shoes she is also on their side. When Ibrahim is caught he is wearing red and all the walls and the carpets is red showing danger also. In terms of ethnicity all yhr different ethnic groups are wearing red signifying unity.
